I too try for once a month, but more like once every 2 months... Actually, it's more like "Hmmm, I need to do a water change on the R3 tanks, time to do a waterchange on my display system to get the aged saltwater for the R3 systems!"

I try to do a 5% change once a week but it usually turns into a 10% every two weeks.

I voted once a month. Although the tank is lucky if it gets done even that often..

I try for once a month, but here lately it's been about every 2 months, or when I think about it.  Kind of neglected my current setup while finishing my tank room.

Curious. Why do you vacum your sandbed. There are lots of good things living in it that you are removing.

I have done alot of reading on this and, like most things in this hobby, there are alot of opinions both ways.

The last article I read was in FAMA magazine. They did a 3 part study and the conclusion was that you do more good than harm by vacuming. More bad stuff including detirus was removed, along with stopping any dead spots that could become toxic. Most of the good biological matter is fastened hard to the grains. The few good "critters" that were removed were replenished in a few days.

All I know for sure is not only does my sand look better after cleaning, but my corals respond by blowing up loud and pround, so they show me they like it.

      Do you have a DSB?

I do about 35gal every 2 weeks on my 120, I change my carbon every two weeks and my phosphate reactor media every month.

No, I have a very shallow sand bed, but I still see better results vacuming than not.
